TBI upgrade...

TBI upgrade...

Postby Jerry Dixon on Sat Jul 25, 2009 1:57 pm

Well, I installed a GM Throttle Body Injection (TBI) on my Cruiser. Got most of the parts from a ’93 GMC Sierra Van, TBI, computer, wiring harness, knock sensor, coil etc. Had to buy a fuel pump and a VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Luis made me an adapter for the TBI to the Toyota manifold, but I got impatient and ordered one.

Got the GM computer to vehicle wiring diagram off the internet, and also the Downey installation directions. Both are needed to make things go well.

Discounting my own mistakes, it a straight forward installation. About the only concern is the air cleaner, you can buy one for $125, or build your own. I used two 12inch pizza pans which cost me $6, to sandwitch the GM filter between.

Runs fine in the garage, and will get it out for a test drive Monday. Have to do some wiring mods in the wiring harness to make it clean.

I’ll let you know how the test run goes…

Right now I have a surge while at idle. Goes from 700 to 1400 for a second then back down, sometimes it stalls the engine. This runs about every 15 – 20 seconds.

So, I have a couple things to check out. But first I have to get the “check engine” light installed and see if there are any codes that may lead me in the right direction. Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have it on the road and that may also show some problems. But then again, what else does a Cruiser owner do but problem solve???

Well, right now the Cruiser runs beautifully. The TBI was a great addition.

The problem with the idle appears to have been a bad IAC (Idle Air Control). After replacing this item, the surge disappeared and everything else worked great. I’ve only driven it about ten miles, but will do a longer run later this week.

Running stock GM chip. Will need to get some miles on it to see if it needs updating/upgrade.

Hope to put some miles on it this week in the Citrus Forest.

Well, I put about 40 miles on the TBI this Friday, ran about 98%. I sometimes have an idle issue, not sure where to start for an answer. Twice during a stop at signals, the idle would start to surge from about 700 RPM up to 1300 and back, sometimes near stalling the engine. May be as simple as adjusting the idle with a good tach. I'll try that today.

I am amazed how well the engine responds, pulls great through all gears.

Enough for now, going out to better secure the wiring and play with the idle.

I set the idle up a bit, still no good tach to judge the RPM, the one I have shows about 850 RPM, but not too sure.

Another item that I found out is the computer will “learn” how you drive the vehicle and make some adjustments from what is on the EPROM. It takes from seven to thirty minutes for the computer to smarten up.

Well, I finally smartened up too. I have a battery cut off switch in the cruiser, and I turn off the batteries every night and even when the cruiser will be parked for a couple of hours or so. So…if the computer loses power for whatever reason, it reverts back to the basic information that was factory programmed into it, meaning it has to learn all over again. Maybe this is why it had a couple of idle problems the other day as I turned off the power when I went into a couple of stores.

Anyone out there have an EPROM burner???

I can torch it!:) Maybe a small wire from the battery to the computer to keep it "learned"
