I don't know of anyone that would rebuild it for you.

I have done four rebuilds on 4Runners for relatives and they are easy enough to do. The worse part is getting the intake plenum off and back on, those hoses and connectors are short, hidden and just a pain. If you do it yourself, use a digital camera and take many, many pictures, especially how the wiring harness lays in the intake area. And don’t forget the pain of a ground wire under the intake.

Thanks Jerry... I may go ahead and give it try... Plenty of pictures and notes... I've just never set main bearings in or anything and it's what you just don't know that will get ya.... I'll have to give it some thought... Found a complete 22RE 1994 toyo w/250K on it. They said it needs a head gasket. I'm gonna' go over and get it running and drive it onto the trailer. Then decide which way to go w/it... Thanks for your help and advice!!...

If it needs a head gasket, don't drive it. Water can get to the oil and bearings and you'll have what you have now.

If you do the engine yourself, give me a call or post up, I'll come over and help when you need it. I'm sure Luis would help also. We won't leave you stranded.

Well, I started checking around and the guys at "Putney's: out in CA seem to know their stuff. They were certainly very helpful and educated me on some 22RE stuff. He has all original jap toyo internal comonents and also uses a reworked cylinder head. They have a "Stage one" 22RE that is just a massaged stock engine, nothing wild. For the stage one engine, reworked head, valve, cam and spring upgrade, with new injectors it's under $1900.00, plus shipping coast to coast... Coming from a heavy V8 world, this seems like a real bargain, I think my four speed muncie tranny 2300 bucks. Has anyone heard of Putneys??...

I haven't heard of Putney's, but they could be very good. I've done business with http://www.lcengineering.com/ and they make great engines in my opinion.

Did you think to go to IH8MUD and look on their 79-95 Toyota Truck Tech forum http://forum.ih8mud.com/ . There may be a bunch of other options out there.

Hi,

It's me Luis. Per Jerry's email, I'm more than glad to help you anytime. I agree with Jerry in not running it w/a bad Head Gasket. Before you go out an buy a new engine, my recommendation is to do a compression test on all cylinders. This will determine how strong is your engine. If the engine has a good compression, pull the Head Gasket and see how bad is the damage. Call me and we can go over some other things that be helpful.

Thanks
Luis
