Winching with two snatch blocks...

Postby Jerry Dixon on Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:50 am

At the GSMTR in Tellico last May, we had the opportunity to winch on more than one occasion. Most of the winching was a basic straight line pull to get yourself over an obstacle. On one trail, an FJ40 got to an obstacle and couldn’t make it over it. So when we hooked up his winch line we found out that the winch would not work.

The 40 behind the temporarily forward deprived vehicle had a working winch. But the trail was not wide enough to allow feeding out the cable to a tree in front of the other Cruiser via a snatch block and pull him up and over the obstacle. The cable would have to ride beside the troubled truck and would rub when tension was put on the cable.

The easy solution was to angle the truck with the good winch slightly to one side toward a stout tree in front of and to the side of the troubled truck. Using two snatch blocks, we fed the cable off to one side then directed it to the second snatch block that was directly in front of the troubled truck and created a straight pull.

Thanks for sharing.
It was this situation that is inspiring me to invest in a snatch block.
